Concrete in Summer: Why Heat is the Enemy of Your Mix and How to Fight Back
Anyone who has worked on a building site in July knows what mixing concrete under the summer sun means. Temperature is not a background variable — it’s a critical factor that can compromise the structural quality of an entire project. Yet summer concrete management is still underestimated by many companies.
What Happens to Concrete When It’s Hot
When temperatures exceed 30°C (86°F), the chemical reaction between cement and water — known as hydration — accelerates abnormally. The result is concrete that ‘sets’ faster than expected, drastically reducing the usable working time. Above 35°C, loss of workability can occur in less than 30 minutes after mixing.
→ Plastic shrinkage: water evaporates too quickly, creating micro-cracks on the surface
→ Reduced final strength: a 10°C increase in mix temperature can reduce strength by 5–10%
→ Irregular setting problems: shaded zones and sun-exposed areas behave differently
Practical Countermeasures to Apply on Site
The first rule is to act on controllable variables. We can’t stop the sun, but we can reduce mix temperature and better manage working times.
→ Use cold or ice water for mixing — every 10°C reduction in water temperature lowers the final mix temperature by approximately 2°C
→ Store aggregates in the shade and wet them before use
→ Work in cooler hours: early morning or evening
→ Cover poured concrete with wet sheets or damp hessian to slow evaporation
→ Use approved retarding admixtures to extend working time
The Role of the Mixer: Speed and Consistency
Mix quality also depends on the machine.
